This birthday cake features yarn in a basket, made for my friend who has become quite the talented knitter! The yarn balls are made using rounded rice krispy treats, covered in a layer of solid fondant, and then small fondant strips. If I had all the time in the world I would have loved to roll each piece of yarn into a round string… but to save time on this one I ended up using a ribbon cutter to create the small strips, kept them bunched together, and attached panels of a few strips at a time. These sit on a base of spice cake covered in brown fondant with a subtle basket weave pattern imprinted. I finished it off with some BBQ skewers as knitting needles, and a hand-shaped yarn name for the birthday girl.
